“John W. Magaw, Saint Mary class of 1953, was one of many Saint Mary High School graduates to answer the call to serve their country. John began his service by joining the Ohio State Highway Patrol in 1957, upon graduation from Otterbein College. He left the Patrol, a job he loved, in 1967, he said, to afford college for his children. He became a special agent with the United States Secret Service in charge of the Vice-Presidential protective division. Magaw soon became the agent assigned with “tagging along after President Bush.” He became Director of the United States Secret Service from 1992 to 1993. When the siege of Waco ended in disaster, Magaw was appointed Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) to provide needed leadership. He served as Acting Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and later as Undersecretary of the Transportation Security, he organized the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA). Magaw received the Presidential Meritorious Award twice and the Presidential Distinguished Award.”
